Review: Yo! Fit Pass

I've been looking for an alternative to KFit for a while now.

At the beginning, it was because of KFit's disorganization. Sometimes I'd get charged for lessons that were cancelled by the studios, sometimes I'd get charged even if I canceled on time, but the turning point was when KFit announced their 10-class cap per monthly.

At the height of my fitness obsession, I went for 14 classes a week. When work started, I had to tame it down to 4 classes a week. Now, thanks to the new cap, I am limited to twice a week, three on the final week. I was grumpy and unfit and had a shit ton of energy with nowhere to go.

Then I got approached by Yo! Fit Pass.

To be honest, they approached me a long time ago heh heh heh but I was, at that point, still very into KFit and so did not think about trying a new pass. But with this new development, I thought it was high time for a new ride.

Yo! Fit Pass is (slightly) different from KFit.

Instead of purely offering fitness classes, Yo! Fit takes the best of both worlds by linking up with wholesome meal providers. From cold soba to fitness rations, they are the representative that a healthy lifestyle is 80% diet and 20% exercise.

To have a reasonable comparison, I’ll take their 3rd package of $189 for 10 meals and 10 classes to compare to KFit at $99 for 10 classes. Which works out to for $90 more, I get 10 meals across Singapore, each probably healthier than the last.

But if you know me, you’d know I’m notoriously picky with food. I’d rather not eat anything for a whole day as opposed to touch vegetables/ foreign meat. But since I'm trying to be healthy (why can't deep fried nuggets be healthy), I decided to give Yo! Fit's offerings a go.

The first one was Healthy Soba IKI at One Raffles Place.

p/s Sorry poor waitress who just wanted to serve me food and not take vain photos I AM SORRY

My boyfriend looooooves cold soba.

I initially wanted to get this with him but he made a face when I told him it was a healthy variation (that's why he failed his trial IPPT) and so I headed here alone.

To be honest, it was bland. I think I might have to drink the sauce provided as opposed to dipping my noodles in because the taste of it was so mild, it made the masala-loving fiend inside me weep.

The soba was springy and soft, but depended much on its complements for taste. The sesame and seaweed helped a fair bit, giving the dish more dimension and a much-needed flavour.

My final note is that even though this dish was uneventful, it was very filling, which is the full purpose of a healthy diet after all - to maximize stomach space with the least amount of foods possible.

My second, and last, stop was Guacamole by Gastro Therapy Group.

Can you hear my stomach sing?

Singing the song of guacamole!

I use Les Mis soundtracks for everything. Stuck unmotivated in a yoga limbo? Cue 'One Day More'. Submitting my excuse-ridden application form to take unpaid leave for back-to-back yoga classes? Let 'Look Down' rip.

I love guacamole. It is the single most underrated dip in the world. If Mexico is always high-strung on loud music and elaborate dances, it is because they are in constant celebration that they discovered guacamole. Top that on a taco you truly have the land of a green enchantment.

Singapore sees little of it. Maybe I don't go to enough Mexico restaurants, but the first time I occurred it was at Warner Bros Movie World. Me and the boyfriend were recovering from the Arkham Asylum ride and took solace in a bowl or carne asada fries, topped with guacamole.

A dove might as well descended from heaven carrying a scroll with the single line, 'You're Welcome' because my fucking God, it was the best dish I've had in at least a year. We spent the rest of the trip seeking out Mexican stalls just to relive that taste. God bless you, Mexico.

What was I talking about?

Okay yes, so imagine my excitement when I found this place.

The address was peculiar and I was afraid I wouldn't find it but the guacamole in my blood made me turn when I was crossing an overhead air conditioned hallway and LO AND BEHOLD, MY SALVATION AWAITS!

I chose their smoked chicken variation. As stated, I don't understand vegetables so the following slew of ingredients were quite unbeknownst to me. I know they topped it off generously with guacamole. I felt a single tear rolling about the side of my eye.

I almost ate the plastic bowl too.

I'm kidding.

But the smoked chicken truly was fantastic. Tender to a fault and deliciously seasoned, this gives healthy eating a run for its money. I've always found it hard to keep a strict diet and that's why, despite my regular fitness classes, my body is still unchanged.

If you offered this slice of heaven at every yoga studio I go to, I promise I'll drop nuggets. And nuggets are the backbone of my existence. Okay wait let's go back to the dish.

The smoked chicken was upturned only by the creamy and refreshing guacamole. I struggle with vegetables but I forced bits of them down just because they were happily mixed up in the confusion and I couldn't let a single drop of guacamole go to waste. Yes okay I'll drop by Avocado Annoymous someday.

I must have looked pretty moronic to the staff. This tiny girl digging out meat ferociously (they were stuck at the base) and eating them in sheer, unbridled ecstasy but making faces when she touched the vegetables.

To be honest, this was a very good dish.

In part because of the generous amount of vegetables, but mainly because their meat is so well done that it satiates. I don't feel sorry that I gave up a potential 700 calorie chicken chop with fries for lunch, instead I feel like I reached the same sensory satisfaction, and at 300 calories instead.

Over the weekend, I also tried one of the Yo! Fit Pass exclusive classes.

KFit and Guava has most of their fitness offerings, but I haven't seen this particular partner for either of them. Give my undying love for the sand and the sea and the idea of parading my body in tiny bikinis, I naturally couldn't pass this up.

This is Stand-up Paddling at Adventure Paddlers:

My lesson was supposed to be at 10am. 10am passed, then 10.05am, then 10.10am. It became apparent no one was coming to get me. I started calling the Ohana Beach House and Adventure Paddlers numbers but to no avail.

At this point, God parted my now-raging skies apart and dropped me a bulky Texas man, who explained a certain Kelvin from Adventure Paddlers promised him that he could rent a kayak and head out to Pulau Ubin. It sounded so much cooler than my stand up paddling.

In the end, thanks to his insistence that there exists a Kelvin, I managed to find the said man's number and eventually, by 10.45am, 45 minutes after my intended class start time, someone came to get me.

After a while, I set sail.

I fumbled really bad at first.

My board could only go right, and so I crashed the kayak of these batch of secondary school kids who were here for their kayak course lol. Their instructor figured I was a first-timer and helpfully pushed the tip of my board towards the sea, where I steadily went.

To me, it seemed I was fucking far out. The buoys were closer to me than the shore, and I wanted so bad to keep going, but I didn't have my phone so I stopped in the middle of the sea, changed my course, and went back to get it lol. My vanity will truly be the death of me.

Once I got my balance in check, I started my yoga practice.

I tell you, the winds were not in my favor. I'd row out to the middle of the sea, start and immerse myself in yoga, then come up 10 minutes later to realize I've been swept back to shore. But better than to be swept towards the sea la hahaha.

As pissed as I am (I had to dismount from the remotest parts of Pasir Ris Beach and at one point I crashed into a rock-filled area and cut my soles on the rock edges trying to push off my board), I was quite impressed that yoga at sea was so bloody calming, I didn't detect my board moving at all.

I continued to idiotically row myself out to sea, then yoga until I floated back inshore. This happened like seven times and my idiocy fascinated the beach-goers so much, one kid pointed at me and went, 'Mummy what is she doing?' while another couple took photos of me.

I am conflictedly flattered.

If you can't tell by now, I love the sun. I truly do. Couple that with water, and a sport I just started but got the hang of immediately, and yoga, and you truly do get the happiest chick. I was rowing and singing Bring Me The Horizon's True Friends at the top of my lungs. Maybe scared a kid or two.

Eventually I had to end because Gabriel's bike lesson ended so I returned my board and went to shower. But not before admiring my photos and looking forlornly towards the sea. So fitting that I date a sailor.

In conclusion:

It is undeniable that competitors KFit and Guavapass have a lot more partners than Yo! Fit Pass does for now, but it is a brand I'd watch. Singaporeans are all about the food after all, and it truly is easier to stick to a diet if you know where to find the healthy, and Yo! Fit does that for you.

Their bestselling deal is a $159 pass for 5 classes and 5 meals. It makes a great starter pack for anyone who is new to the fitness scene looking for a small pass to try on. It works out to about $15.90 per class/ meal, cheaper than most studios and a more wholesome option than your $17.99 fish and chips lunch day in day out.

To me, the biggest takeaway is discovering Adventure Paddlers. To have the sea and yoga meet so beautifully is a joy to me. I love exploring Singapore and so even the process of finding hard-to-reach places like this and Guacamole by Gastro Theraphy Group was fun to me.

So hey, take a discovery about Singapore while being fit and healthy at the same time!

Your perfect Tumblr body is a 80% diet, 20% exercise regime away.

By the way, this is not a paid post.

Yo! Fit pass sponsored two meals and two classes. I might have gone on happily for too long but that's because I truly am passionate about fitness and I want to help you, lazy reader, make a positive change in your life. And it starts easier when you pick up a pass.
