Review: Wings to Wings Dance Development Centre

Rhythmic gymnastics gives me an insane high.

I finished a class early today and I still can't do certain poses, but my side-lying leg raises are getting spectacular. Helps that I have the most adorable Russian instructor who'd come over and torture me and encouragingly go, "Beautiful!" when I get into a deeper stretch haha.

I miss regular gymnastics. I miss being surprised at myself for being able to do rolls and handstands and then suffering on the trampoline. I think the biggest shame is I never got to learn how to tumble. Why can't gymnastics come to Guavapass already!

Headed over to surprise my grandma but decided to call anyway in case she is out partying and the first thing she said when she heard my voice was, "You very long never call me already," awww my grandma.

But of course, photos first:

Grandma told me about how she got pregnant at 20 years old and hence had no time to 'have fun'. Then she thought about it and said there's nothing fun to do anyway. I said she can play with the pigs and chickens she reared and then eat them after hahaha.

She was not entertained. She continued talking about how movies used to be 30 cents and how great-grandma would occasionally give them 5 cents as a gratuity for helping out at home and they'd save till they have enough to watch a Xie Xian movie.

I should find photos of this old outdoor cinema place and surprise her with them!

She kept adjusting her hair and her necklace hahaha so vain.

Headed off to Wings to Wings after.

The place is relatively easy to find, I was early for class so I chatted with another early student. She reminds me a lot of April. Very personable with the most endearing self-depreciating sense of humor haha. She assured me the class was easy.

And it was, but not in a bad way.

The instructor is very technical, if you ask me. Within an hour, I learnt quite a few things about the details of contemporary. For example, ballet travels in 3 directions, but contemporary travels in a circle. It's a set of 9, for up down left and right.

Then she trained our keenness with our peripheral vision by making us sprint about the place, making sure to not hit each other while keeping our heads straight. But my absolute favorite part was a freestyle group dance.

Embarrassing as it is, here is the video:

It was such a blast.

We were supposed to stick together and then the person leading the group will start a move, then swing it over to someone else. And this someone else will lead the group into a new move and end off handing the imaginary baton forward, Rinse and repeat.

I got to try so many moves! Some of it were very taichi and some of it were overly dramatic and some of them were fucking classy and some of them were predictable. But the whole experience was deeply satisfying.

Can't wait for more!
